Overview

"Stewarding a cultural pathway along Highway 3, connecting Vancouver and Calgary through a misty rainforest, sun-drenched deserts, wondrous mountains, and limitless prairies."

The Sustainable Journeys from Prairies to Pacific (SJFPTP) corridor leverages Highway 3 as a must-drive interprovincial route connecting southern Alberta and British Columbia. This corridor offers a colourful collection of resort towns, charming rural communities, and many First Nations, nestled between nationally and provincially recognized parks. Visitors can enjoy trails and outdoor recreation, Indigenous experiences, agritourism, wildlife viewing, western heritage, and more.

Current Status and Updates

Travel Alberta and Destination BC are in early discussions to collectively advance the strategy's pillars, identifying shared opportunities and collaboration pathways across the corridor.

In Alberta:

  • Travel Alberta's Tourism Development Zone (TDZ) project has progressed to the Design Phase for the Southern Alberta region, focusing on developing building blocks for sustainable tourism growth along Highway 3.
  • Key initiatives include prioritizing investment in high-quality, year-round boutique accommodations and launching 'Savour the Alberta South', a culinary and agritourism initiative along Highway 3.

In British Columbia:

  • Destination BC is leading efforts to amplify and communicate the SJFPTP strategy to partners across the province.
  • Workshops and sessions on tourism investment readiness were conducted at the BC Economic Summit (May 2024) and the BC Economic Development Leadership Learning Exchange (October 2024).
  • Ongoing collaboration with the Highway 3 Tourism Alliance members to advance priorities outlined in the SJFPTP strategy.
  • Two SPARK programs were launched that impact Highway 3:
    • Rainforest to Rockies: The Highway 3 Museum tour received seed funding, mentorship, and support to enhance visitor experiences along the corridor.
    • Boundary Country: A program currently underway to spark innovative tourism ideas in the region.

These initiatives aim to enhance current offerings, address gaps, motivate travel and longer stays, and increase year-round visits along the corridor.

Additionally, Tourism Lethbridge, in collaboration with SouthGrow Regional Initiative and the Alberta SouthWest Regional Alliance, has launched a national tourism initiative aimed at bolstering the tourism industry in Southern Alberta. This initiative aligns with the corridor's goals and is supported by federal funding through the Government of Canada's Tourism Relief Fund.
